Ok, whatever, it was my idea. It was raining. We had this big mayonnaise jar. What else could I do?
I believe I have correctly identified our new friend as L'escargot des bois (Cepaea nemoralis) Considering the apparent relative scarcity of these guys, we'll release him back into the woods in a few days. I went out expecting to find a dozen snails in 10 minutes, but it took us almost an hour just to find this one. Right now, he's pretty cozy with some dirt, a leaf, some carrot peelings, and a bit of apple core. Oh, and some fresh thyme, to make his terrarium smell pleasant.
