Eliot has still not chosen his "handedness"
Yesterday, while watching Eliot color, I couldn't help but cringe at his marker-clenched-in-fist method. Now, like I said, I'm not planning to teach him how to draw, but I do want him to use good technique when he does art. So, I was struck by inspiration, and once again attempted to show him how to hold his marker correctly. This time, however, I had a much better idea of how to do it, which, until proven otherwise, I am going to claim to have invented.
(Is it just me, or do I use a lot of commas?)
1. Place the hand which one wants to draw flat on the table. (Eliot is still using both left and right hands equally, which I think is part of why he has been struggling with a good pencil grip) 2. Place the marker, point down towards the paper, between the thumb and index finger.
3. Turn your hand to pick it up. This worked on first try, and for the rest of the coloring time, he used it exclusively to pick up his markers, claiming that real artists hold their markers like this, and Ivy was only a baby artist with her clenched-in-fist method. And when we did more coloring this morning, he also immediately used the pencil grip.
p.s. I know there's quite a bit of team spirit with the blog fast Fridays... I'll join, I promise, but I'll have to wean myself off slowly. :-)
