Oops. My mom is getting on my case for not putting up the rest of the photos from our trip...We ventured into the German-speaking part of Switzerland, where we toured around Bern and Interlaken for the day. This was my first trip to Bern, and second to Interlaken.
In Bern, we took a guided tour around the main part of the city. It's a beautiful place. In the streets, wine cellars have
been converted into stores and cafés which open directly onto the road. We stopped in front of the old clock at noon, which still runs on a system of weights and mechanical gears, rather than electricity. Some poor guy has to pull the weights (about 800 lbs) all the way back up to the top of the tower every night! The only unfortunate thing is that we missed the Onion Festival by one weekend. We did see a nice market though, full of unusual fruits and veggies. We also passed in front of one of Einstein's apartments while he lived in Bern and worked at the university.

We also saw the enormous cathedral of Bern. It's covered in statues giving us gruesome reminders of what NOT to do if you want to get past the pearly gates. Here's a friendly gargoyle...
Interlaken was just as beautiful as I remembered. And no trip to Switzerland is complete without a standard traffic jam caused by a herd of cows being moved from one field to another by 10 year old shephard boys.
